The wait for Skoda’s new car launch after the Slavia and Kushaq has been quite a long one. According to Volkswagen’s 2.0 Plan - which stated the launch of more budget cars under Volkswagen and Skoda - Skoda was supposed to launch new cars, mainly SUVs till now. But, it has been more than two years and no whistles have been blown by both the brands. However, it seems that the wait is finally over, as Skoda has revealed the Official Name of its upcoming sub-4-meter SUV.
Skoda planned to keep the name of this upcoming all-new SUV relatable to other Skoda SUV names. In fact, the brand let ‘us’ consumers guess what the name could be by giving the initial and last letters - K and Q. Other Skoda SUVs, like Kushaq and Kodiaq have their names starting with K and ending with Q. Moreover, the name ‘Kushaq’ has been taken from the Sanskrit dialect, and it means King or Ruler.
For Skoda’s sub-4-meter SUV name, over 20,000 entries were registered, out of which, 10 were shortlisted. Further, Skoda shortlisted 5 names out of those 10 - Kwiq, Kosmiq, Kliq, Kylaq, and Kayaq. Finally, the name ‘KYLAQ’ is chosen. The name ‘Kylaq’ is also derived from the Sanskrit dialect, and it means Crystal.
The Skoda Kylaq will sit in a goldmine-like segment of India. Currently, this segment is heavily crowded by a lot of brands. The Kylaq will go head-to-head against the likes of Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Renault Kiger, Nissan Magnite, and Mahindra XUV 3XO.
The Kylaq will be the Ninth SUV in this segment. Skoda Officials have claimed that the Skoda Kylaq is made specially for the Indian market. All the needs and wants one has from this segment, the Kylaq promises to fulfill them. The Kylaq has been developed in India and Europe and will be locally manufactured in the Volkswagen-Skoda factory in India, mostly in their Chakan Plant.
The Skoda Kylaq will rival India’s most-selling SUVs, like the Tata Nexon and Maruti Brezza. Due to this, Skoda needs to make the Kylaq capable of withstanding its rivals. Till now, Skoda has not revealed anything regarding the Kylaq except its name. But, we have made some presumptions based on the segment's needs & wants, and what could Skoda bring up with Kylaq.
The Kylaq has been spied on several times, and based on those spy shots - The Kylaq’s design will be inspired by the Kushaq majorly, and will have a few bits and pieces of its own to differentiate. The Kylaq will run on 16-inch alloy wheels. It will have almost all of its lighting set in LEDs, except for the Indicators maybe.
Inside the cabin, the Kylaq could have a 10-inch Infotainment system with Wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay. The Instrument Cluster might get a color TFT screen, too. The Kylaq will offer a Single zone Climate control unit with Rear AC vents. Two Armrests, Cup holders, a Wireless Charging Pad, a Two-spoke Steering wheel with Media controls & Cruise Control, Leatherette Seating, etc could be offered as well. The inclusion of a Sunroof is tentative but, if offered, it will be a smaller unit.
The Kylaq will run on only one engine option - a 1.0 L Turbo Petrol Engine. This engine is offered in the lower variants of the Kushaq, Taigun, Slavia, and Virtus. It produces 120 hp and 170 Nm torque. It will be offered with both Manual and Automatic Transmission.
The chances of Skoda introducing one more naturally aspirated 1.0 L Petrol engine are very low. But, if introduced it will be the same unit from the Volkswagen polo and Skoda Fabia but, it will be heavily updated, too. Back then, this engine produced 76 hp and 95 Nm torque.
Skoda has confirmed that the Kylaq will arrive in early 2025. We expect it to launch in January. On the other hand, the price of the sub-4-meter SUV could start from ₹9 Lakh and move up to ₹15 Lakh.
