Tata Curvv ICE Launching on Sept 2 - Four Important Things to Know

August 26th, 2024

Tata has already launched the Curvv EV except the Curvv ICE - Petrol & Diesel. But, let alone the Curvv.ev, this EV has done wonders post its launch, as all of the ‘to be’ & ‘existing’ EV buyers love it. A survey also says that current Nexon EV buyers are opting for the Curvv EV as an update, and a few have already done it. Now, as the Curvv ICE launches on September 2, 2024 - these are a few things you should know about this Midsize Coupe SUV rivaling the Hyundai Creta.

1 - Attractive Coupe Design

Tata Curvv launch

The Curvv EV was the first SUV to launch with a Coupe design in this Midsize SUV segment but, it was particularly in its EV sector. Speaking of the ICE Midsize SUV sector, Citroen’s Basalt is the first SUV to launch with a Coupe design, and the Curvv ICE will follow it to be the second in the segment.

The Curvv’s coupe design language is a lot better than that of the Basalt, as it is more proportionate with a good-looking body structure. Adding more to it, not only comparing the Curvv with the Basalt but, also with the segment-king, Hyundai Creta - Compared to this SUV, the Curvv is a much better-looking SUV. Tata Motors deliberately went with an unconventional design language to tackle the dominance of the Creta, as they knew with a conventional or usual SUV design language, it would be a lot more difficult to beat Creta.

Moreover, speaking more details about Curvv’s design language - it gets a similar Nexon-like front end with a split LED headlamp design but, it has a connected LED DRL with sequential Turn Indicators. The Grille design has been taken from flagship Tata SUVs - Safari and Harrier. The inclusion of ADAS’ Radar and Camera has been done with the Front camera unit of the 360-degree Camera system, too.

The Side is where the SUV shines with its slopping roofline, it gives the Curvv a sporty look with a clean flow of design. The Curvv also runs on 18-inch Diamond cut Alloys, the SUV has been given thick Glossy wheel claddings all around the SUV. It gets flush door handles with illumination on all doors for better visibility.

The Rear of the SUV is a pure sight, as it gets the best-looking connected LED Tail lamp. It runs smooth and sort of tapers off at both ends, it also gets sequential Turn Indicators. The Curvv also gets a First-in-segment feature - Electric Tailgate with Gesture Opening.

2 - Based on Tata Motors’ new ATLAS Platform

Earlier, the Curvv was speculated to be based on the existing Nexon’s platform but, Tata Motors, at the time of launch, revealed their new platform for the Curvv ICE and their upcoming future ICE SUVs - Sierra ICE.

This new platform is called ATLAS - Adaptive Tech Forward Lifestyle Architecture. The ATLAS platform is Tata Motors’ fifth platform, further expanding its portfolio. This base has been developed in India by Tata Motors, they have kept one motive for this platform that it should be able to accommodate all the future technological advancements.

The ATLAS platform is said to be able to underpin SUVs of various Shapes and Sizes. It can also host various sizes of Engines, so, be it Petrol or Diesel. To support multiple displays, the platform will be integrated with a Cockpit-to-wheel Controller and a Centralized body Controller. The platform has also been built to serve the best class of safety in the segment and also to continue Tata’s history of making safe platforms.

The ATLAS platform will underpin the upcoming Curvv ICE as its first SUV. After that maybe we could see the Nexon being upgraded onto the ATLAS from its decades-old Indica platform. The Sierra ICE will also be based on this platform.

3 - Biggest Infotainment Screen in the Segment

Tata Curvv features

The Curvv is also quite ahead in terms of cabin offerings compared to its key rivals. The SUV will offer the first-in-segment biggest Infotainment screen, measuring up to 12.25 inches in size. This screen is the same unit from big Tata SUVs - Harrier and Safari. It is also available in the Curvv EV and Nexon EV. The Curvv ICE will be the cheapest Tata SUV to have this 12.25-inch Infotainment screen.

This screen is very useful and filled with features. This screen controls the AC panel, Media & Music mated to 9 speakers with different intelligent sound modes, Wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, Various Voice Assistant features with Tata’s own VA - Siri - Alexa - Google Assistant, Air Quality Index display of the integrated Air Purifier in the Climate Control, etc.

4 - Turbo Petrol, Diesel & Turbo GDI Engine Options

Tata Curvv engine options

The Curvv ICE’s hood will have the option to house either of the three engine options - 1.5 L Diesel, 1.2 L Turbo Petrol, and 1.2 L Turbo GDI Petrol. All of these engine options have been developed by Tata with the most recent one - 1.2 L T-GDI Petrol.

The 1.2 L T-GDI Petrol is the recent plantation of Tata Motors for its SUVs. This engine option is also a first of its kind for Tata Motors, as the brand has never developed, made, or sourced a GDI-powered engine. This 1.2 L T-GDI unit produces 125 hp and 225 Nm torque. It will be mated with a 6-speed Manual Gearbox and a 7-speed DCA Gearbox. Tata Motors also claims that this engine will be a lot sportier and simultaneously be the quietest, too. After various tries, the brand has finally managed to build a better Petrol engine, as it was said that Tata Motors has one of the worst Petrol Engines but, one of the best Diesel Engines.

This takes us to the next powerhouse, which is the 1.5 L Diesel unit. This engine is quite an old engine but, has always worked wonders. It is also one of the most well-regarded Tata engines. This Diesel unit has been sourced from the Nexon, and it produces 115 hp and 260 Nm torque. This engine will be mated with a 6-speed Manual and 7-speed DCA Gearbox.

The last one is the 1.2 L Turbo Petrol engine. This unit is a 3-Cylinder unit, which serves in a total of two Tata Cars (excluding the Curvv) - Nexon and Altroz. This engine has not been the favorite engine from Tata Motors but, it is more of a ‘getting the job done’ sort of engine. This unit produces 120 hp and 170 Nm torque. It will be mated to a 6-speed Manual and a 7-speed DCA Gearbox.
