Thar Roxx-rival Tata Offroad SUV to launch soon - Will get 180 hp Petrol Engine

August 17th, 2024

Mahindra Thar Roxx will launch on 15 August 2024, which is also the Independence of India. This Off-road SUV has created a lot of buzz already in the market, as it is the first 5-door Indian off-road SUV, and also the 5-door version of the Thar 3-door. The Thar Roxx will be premium compared to the Thar 3-door and will pick most of its comfort-oriented features from the Mahindra Scorpio-N and the XUV 7OO. Currently, the Thar Roxx does not have any competition in the Indian but, it will not be the same forever. Tata Motors’ first off-road-oriented SUV, the Tata Sierra will rival the Thar Roxx once launched.

What is the Tata Sierra?

Tata Sierra

Well, the Sierra is Tata Motors’ one of the legendary SUVs from the 90’s. It was India’s first SUV that was developed and produced in the country itself. It was also one of the most unique and capable SUVs launched to tackle the Mahindra back then. The Sierra was very popular in its time and even today because it had a distinctive design - A Three door SUV with Huge Curved Glass for the Rear Passengers.

It used to get a 2.0 L Turbocharged Diesel engine, it was also ahead in terms of features throughout its segment of SUVs. The main attraction of the Sierra was its back seat, as it used to get a long legroom with comfortable seats, and as mentioned earlier, a huge curved window on both sides. Overall, the design silhouette of the Sierra was pure classic.

But, by the early 2000s Tata Motors started phasing out in the Indian Automobile Industry, as the business was just declining for the brand. Moreover, the competition, mainly Maruti Suzuki, came up with much more affordable cars which re-directed customers from buying huge SUVs, as they were comparatively feasible. Hence, this made Tata Motors discontinue the Sierra in 2000.

Is Tata Sierra making a Comeback?

Thar Roxx variants

Yes! After almost two decades, the Tata Sierra is making a comeback with a new face and a similar aura to its design. The upcoming Sierra was showcased in 2020 as a concept alongside the HBX ( Tata Punch ).

This Sierra was showcased as an EV, which will be based on the Acti.ev platform - Currently underpinning the Punch.ev and the Curvv.ev. But, the Sierra will also be launched with an ICE ( Internal Combustion Engine ).

This upcoming Sierra will most probably sit above the Harrier & Safari. It will also be the brand’s most premium SUV to date. It will have a lot of comfort-oriented features and plush interiors for better luxury. Moreover, Tata Officials also confirmed that the Sierra will be the best of both worlds - Comfort and Driving. This means one can enjoy sitting in the back seat, as well as while driving it.

Tata Sierra ICE Design

Tata Sierra launch date

The Design of the Sierra will be very different from the usual Tata SUV designs that we have seen till now. It will be a lot boxier from the outside resembling the Land Rover Defender more. It will also have that huge, macho SUV stance thanks to the huge wheels.

From the front, it will have a similar Headlamp layout as in the Nexon, Curv, Harrier, and Safari. But, this layout will have major design distinctions - it will have more squared elements. Moreover, it will be spread in the lower half more, further giving a broad look. It will also have a long-connected LED DRL. On the Side, it will stand on big wheels with huge claddings and muscular arches. From the side and Rear, it will resemble the Defender a lot. The upcoming Tata Sierra will have 5-doors, unlike the original Tata Sierra.
