May 16th, 2023

Toyota has unveiled its new Yaris Cross SUV which is made especially for the ASEAN regions and is to be launched first in Indonesia. The SUV somewhat resembles the Hyundai Creta and is not to be confused with its European version.

Platform And Dimensions

The New Toyota Yaris Cross is based upon the DNGA (The Low-Cost Substitute of the TNGA platform) platform that underpins multiple cars in the ASEAN markets including the Toyota Avanza MPV, the Latest Yaris, and the Toyota Raize SUV.

The Yaris Cross SUV is about 4310 mm in length, 2620 mm in wheelbase, and 1620 mm in height, which is bigger than its direct rival Hyundai Creta in Indonesia. Considering its dimensions the Yaris Cross is closer to the European Honda H-RV.

The Yaris Cross also has some level of off-road capabilities, due to its 260 mm of ground clearance, 19 deg approach angle, 28 deg departure angle, and 5.2 meters turning radius, which makes it suitable for harsh environments as well.

Exterior and Interior

In terms of styling, the front of the Yaris Cross consists of a front-angled upright nose and slim wrap-around headlights along with a tall bumper and a trapezoidal-shaped grille as well. The side profile of the SUV gives a sporty vibe with its roof skewed at the back along with that it consists of square wheel arches, black cladding, skid plates, and sporty alloy wheels to match the look. At the back, the Yaris Cross consists of sleek horizontal tail-lamps and a straight-shaped tailgate.

In terms of its styling, the Yaris Cross doesn't look closely similar to the Yaris Cross sold in the European markets.

Coming to its Interior, the Yaris Cross gets a driver-focused cockpit with a 10.1-inch infotainment system and a 7-inch digital instrument cluster along with that it also gets features like a panoramic sunroof, wireless smartphone connectivity, ambient lighting, and wireless charging as well.

The New Toyota Yaris Cross gets a 2NR-VE 1.5L 4-cylinder petrol engine which produces around 104 hp of power and 138 Nm of torque mated with a CVT gearbox.

The second engine is a 1.5L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder hybrid petrol engine with an electric motor. The engine itself produces around 90 hp and 121 Nm of torque, while the electric motor produces around 79 hp and 141 Nm of torque, it comes mated with Toyota’s e-CVT gearbox.

Launch In India

As of now, it is highly unlikely that the ASEAN Yaris Cross SUV will come to India but if it does, it will have a rivalry with the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, and also the upcoming Honda Elevate.
