The Indian Automotive market is now a safety-driven market. If you ask any potential buyer, they would have safety, as a concern before they buy their car. This has also boosted the business of Private Crash Test Facilities in India. One such is the Global NCAP, which is an International firm, and the recently launched Bharat NCAP by the Indian Road Transport Minister - Mr Nitin Gadkari. These facilities have tested many cars till now. Their recent tests were done on three Indian cars - Mahindra Bolero, Honda Amaze, and Kia Carens, and they have resulted to be one of the worst ones. Let us go through their reports.
Being a Mahindra SUV, the Bolero Neo still scored below par in its Crash tests conducted by the Global NCAP. We all expected it to score at least 4 stars, with respect to the reputation brand carries. But, it has scored even worse.
The Mahindra Bolero Neo has scored 1 Star in Adult Safety Ratings, and 1 Star in Child Safety Ratings. In the Adult Safety test, the Bolero Neo scored 20.26 Points out of 34 points, and in the Child Safety test, the Bolero Neo scored 12.71 points out of 49 points. The Bolero Neo was given these results based on its crash testing through the Frontal Offset Barrier and Side Movable Barrier.
In the Frontal Offset Barrier test, the Bolero Neo had the Driver completely unsafe. Except for the Neck area, the rest everything of the Driver’s body was either falling under Marginal, Weak, or Poor condition. The Co-driver happened to be a lot safer than the driver, as most of its body parts were in Good or Adequate condition. The Side Barrier Impact suffered by the SUV had the Driver’s body in Good condition. The Body Shell was also reported to be unstable post-crash.
Surprisingly, even a Honda has scored very less in its Crash tests conducted by the Global NCAP. We are speaking of the Honda Amaze’s Crash tests. The Amaze is a mini sedan from Honda that promises utmost safety, as claimed by the brand itself.
In the crash tests conducted by Global NCAP, the sedan managed to score only 2Stars in Adult Safety Ratings, and 0 Stars in Child Safety Ratings. In Adult Safety, the Amaze managed to score 27.85 Points out of 34 Points, and in Child Safety, the Amaze scored only 8.58 Points out of 49 Points. These results were given based on the crash testing of the Amaze through the Frontal Offset Barrier and Side Movable Barrier.
In the Frontal Offset Barrier test, both the Driver and the Co-driver had their bodies in decent condition. Their legs and heads were in Good condition, rest of their body was reported to be in Adequate or Marginal condition. The Side Barrier test also showcased the Driver’s body in a decent condition post-crash. It was reported to be in Good condition. The Body shell of the Amaze after the crash was stable, too.
The most interesting thing is, that after this result was out, Honda responded to this, unlike others. The official Honda social media page explained the reason behind their mini sedan scoring so low in its crash tests. Basically, they mentioned that the tests conducted were following the updated protocols of GNCAP, which require equipment, like 6 Airbags, ESC, etc, and the current Amzae lacks all these. Other than this, the Amaze has already been tested back in 2019 by GNCAP itself and has been given 4 Stars rating under the previous protocols. This explains that structurally the Amaze is strong but, as it lacks the current required goodies for a crash test, it has been awarded with only 2 Stars.
The last vehicle tested by the Global NCAP is the Kia Carens, this MPV rivals the likes of the XUV 7OO and the Harrier. It is decently packaged in terms of its engine options, as its rivals get bigger mechanicals. But, when it comes to the technological sector, it is competing with both giving a tough one. The Carens being based on the same platform as the Seltos and the Creta, it was pretty clear that it would score similar numbers in the tests as well.
In Adult Safety, the Carens scored 3 Stars by gaining 22.07 Points out of 34 Points, and in Child Safety, the Carens scored a whopping 5 Stars by gaining 41 Points out of 49 Points. This has also made the Carens the first MPV in India to have a 5 Star safety for a child passenger. All these scores were given based on the Frontal Offset Barrier and Side Offset Barrier crash tests.
In the Frontal Offset Barrier test, the Carens had its Driver’s body with very average safety, as most of the body parts were in Marginal or Weak condition. On the other hand, most of the Co-Driver’s body was in Good condition. In the Side Barrier Crash, the Driver’s body was completely safe, as it was in Good condition. But, post the Frontal Barrier crash, the Body shell was reported to be unstable, which ate the two stars from the Adult Safety Ratings.
