​Curvv’s launch is around the corner, and Tata Motors is already gearing up for this upcoming SUV launch event in India. After revealing the design details of both Curvv and Curvv.ev, Tata Motors has now revealed the name for its upcoming 1.2 L Turbo GDI Petrol engine - HYPERION. 

About the 1.2 L T-GDI Engine 

At the 2023 Auto Expo, Tata Motors announced - they will develop two Turbo-GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) Engines. The most interesting part about these engines is - this is the first time Tata Motors is going to make and fit a Turbo Petrol engine with GDI technology into its cars and SUVs. These engines are purely made to tackle the modern competition that is filled with GDI-powered engines - Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kodiaq, etc. 

One of the Tata GDI engines happens to be a 1.2 L in displacement (1200 cc). This engine will be the first one to come out among the two GDI engines, and the upcoming Curvv will be the SUV with which this engine will make its debut.  

This 1.2 L Turbo GDI engine will produce 125 PS and 225 Nm Torque. These power figures will be much higher than the current Turbo non-GDI Petrol engine of Tata Motors, 1.2 L Turbo Petrol - 120 PS and 170 Nm Torque. 

This engine will be made available with two Transmission options - a 6-speed Manual and a 7-speed DCT Gearbox. The Manual Gearbox will be positioned as a cheaper way to opt for this powerful engine, on the other hand, the DCT Gearbox will be sold as a spirited version of this engine because of which it will be expensive. 

Features of this 1.2 L T-GDI HYPERION Engine

Tata Motors has worked on this mechanical powerhouse for more than one year. This tells us how good this engine could be in terms of its operations. Through the medium of the teaser video, Tata Motors has revealed a few features of its upcoming 1.2 L Turbo GDI Petrol engine -

HYPER - Quiet 

Tata Motors has claimed this engine to be a quiet engine even though being a Turbo GDI unit. This sort of hints at the incredible engineering marvel Tata Motors could have achieved. Well, quiet T-GDI engines are not new but, for Tata Motors? Yes, it is. 

We do not know how good this engine could be to drive but, having worked on this engine for such a long period surely gives us a lot of hope. 

HYPER - Tech

As said, this engine is a first for Tata Motors. So, this kind of tech also is a first for the brand. Moreover, Tata Motors recently has gained popularity in bringing innovative technology to its creations, which also tells us - this 1.2 L T-GDI engine could bring something new to the segment. 

HYPER - Performance

Being a Turbo GDI Petrol engine, it is obvious that it will have crazy-like performance with respect to its offerings. The 125 PS and 225 Nm Torque will make things exciting and might also give a rush-like feeling. 

When will Curvv Launch with the 1.2 L T-GDI Engine and what Price details

This engine will be launched with the Curvv. The launch date of the Curvv is said to be on 7 August. This means the 1.2 L T-GDI engine will also debut on this date. 

The Price of Curvv’s 1.2 L T-GDI engine will be higher than its non-GDI variant. We believe this engine could be made available from ₹14.5 lakhs in the Curvv’s variant lineup.

About the 1.5 L T-GDI Engine 

As we mentioned earlier, there were two engines that were showcased by Tata Motors in the Auto Expo 2023. The first one is the upcoming 1.2 L T-GDI, and the second one happens to be a much bigger - 1.5 L T-GDI engine. This engine will produce 180 PS and 280 Nm Torque. 

This engine will be the most powerful engine ever produced by Tata Motors to date. This engine will also be made specifically for the SUVs above the Tata Nexon i.e. Tata Curvv, Tata Harrier Petrol, Tata Safari Petrol, and Tata Sierra. 

This engine will also make the two big and flagship SUVs of the brand - Harrier and Safari have a most-demanded Petrol option. The Sierra will also house this engine.
