Mahindra Planning to Launch First Indian Hybrid SUV by 2026

October 25th, 2024

Mahindra is surely the king of SUVs in the Indian Automobile Industry. Currently, the brand stands at a higher level of Third Biggest Indian Car Maker in India surpassing Tata Motors. From the very beginning, Mahindra has been focusing only on SUVs. Moreover, in September 2024, Mahindra also sold the most amount of cars in its history of monthly sales - almost 52,000 cars - That too, this brand only sells SUVs.

Over the years, the brand evolved from its own mistakes and turned out to become India’s best SUV maker having some amazing SUVs in its fleet - XUV 700, Scorpio N, Thar, Scorpio Classic, XUV 3XO, Thar Roxx, etc. In fact, not only having a good SUV presence but, good mechanicals and engines made the brand stand out from the crowd.

Today, Mahindra’s Passenger Vehicle engine lineup is mainly being run by two engines - 2.0 L mStallion Petrol engine and 2.2 L mHawk Diesel engine. These engines were updated thoroughly about 2-3 years ago, which made them one of the best in their class in terms of Power and Torque. But, these powerhouses also suffer a severe problem of very low mileage.

Now, let aside the Diesel engine, as it still delivers way better fuel efficiency than the Petrol engine. This 2.0 L mStallion Petrol engine is a terrible unit when it comes to delivering reasonable mileage. This engine powers a total of 4 Mahindra SUVs - Thar, Thar Roxx, Scorpio N, and XUV 700. All of these SUVs are said to be delivering a mileage figure of 8 - 14 km/L, which is terrible at times. Therefore, Mahindra is speculated to be developing a new Strong Hybrid setup for its Petrol SUVs, which could launch in India by 2026.

Mahindra’s Strong Hybrid Technology

This Strong Hybrid system could most probably be developed in India by Mahindra itself. We are not sure which engine will be mated to this strong hybrid system, as today, all of the Mahindra engines are turbocharged starting from 1.2 L Petrol to 2.2 L Turbo Diesel. According to us, Mahindra would set up the Strong Hybrid technology with any one of its two 1.2 L Turbo engines. Moreover, there is a chance that Mahindra could also develop an all-new Naturally aspirated engine of 1500 cc (1.5 L) displacement.

Secondly, speaking of the battery in this strong hybrid setup - We believe Mahindra could offer a battery pack of 1 - 1.5 kWh. This battery would be sufficient for powering and assisting Mahindra vehicles with respect to their heavy weight and powerful engines. Moreover, being a strong hybrid setup, it would have a pure EV mode, which could drive the vehicle on the battery for about 20 - 25 km.

The process of this hybrid system could mostly be dependent on the engine and the battery would act as an assistant in order to de-stress the engine and, ultimately, deliver an amazing fuel economy. The same system is seen in the Maruti Suzuki’s Grand Vitara, which uses a 1.5 L Naturally Aspirated Petrol engine, which is mated to an 800 W battery pack. This setup used by Maruti helps the SUV to deliver an economy of 25+ km/L in the city.

To speak of the fuel economy in Mahindra cars once fitted with this strong hybrid technology - Well, we are not really sure what & how the economy figures would be, as it is not yet clear which engine or hybrid technology will be used.

New Hybrid Mahindra SUV coming?

To speak of this - Well, there is a scope for Mahindra to launch an all-new Hybrid SUV, and it is the Midsize SUV segment, Today, Mahindra does not have any SUV that caters to the Midsize SUV market excluding their pure-offroaders - Thar and Thar Roxx. Mahindra’s SUV lineup starts from the sub-4-meter SUV and goes up to entry-level premium SUVs, like the XUV 700. But, there is a hole in between that Mahindra is yet to fill.

So, there are slight chances of Mahindra launching a new SUV for the Midsize SUV segment, Creta-rivaling. Although, these are purely assumptions, and as we mentioned, it is the slightest of chance. But, if launched, it will be the Mahindra SUV to have the first Strong Hybrid technology from any Indian brand.
