MG Windsor EV Long-Range Variant to Launch in April 2025 with 50 kWh Battery

March 3rd, 2025

India's electric vehicle (EV) market is growing at an incredibly fast pace, and leading this revolution at the moment is MG Motor through its Windsor EV. More popular than anyone had imagined with its game-changing Battery as a Service (BaaS) ownership paradigm, the Windsor EV has gotten phenomenally desired in India. Now, MG is going a step further by launching a long-range variant of the car with a larger 50 kWh battery pack in April 2025.

The move is expected to make the Windsor EV more competitive in the market. Here's all that you need to know about the upgrade.

MG Windsor EV To Offer Longer Range

Today, the Windsor EV is offered with a 38 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery that has an estimated range of 331 km on full charge. The range is adequate for intra-city travel and short highway excursions, but some have been seeking an extended-range version. MG has taken this idea very seriously and is working towards launching a 50 kWh battery pack that should have an ARAI-tested range of approximately 460 km per charge.

The new battery pack has already been utilized in MG's international EV line-up, including the ZS EV, and is also set to improve performance. Internationally, the Windsor EV is available as the Wuling Cloud EV, with the same specifications.

Performance Enhancements

With the larger 50 kWh battery pack, the MG Windsor EV should also pick up in terms of range as well as performance. The MG ZS EV, sharing the same battery, does 0-100 kmph in 8.6 seconds and has a top speed of 175 kmph. Although MG hasn't provided performance numbers for the new Windsor EV variant in an official announcement, the same numbers can be anticipated.

The current powertrain design has a front-mounted 136 bhp electric motor producing 200 Nm of torque. It is expected that the same configuration will be followed for the long-range model, balancing power and efficiency. Moreover, MG has also given various driving modes—Eco, Eco+, Normal, and Sport—which allow drivers to adjust the performance curve of the powertrain as per one's liking.

Interior and Features

MG Windsor

MG has never compromised on a premium experience for its customers, and the Windsor EV is no different. The range-extender version will have all the bells and whistles of the existing model, which include:

  • A massive 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system

  • Wireless smartphone integration

  • Dual-zone climate control

  • Ambient lighting

  • Digital instrument cluster

  • Reclining rear seats

  • Panoramic sunroof

  • Powered driver and co-passenger seats

  • Wireless charging

Safety features of the Windsor EV include six airbags, a 360-degree camera system, and MG's i-Smart connected car features. ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) is not currently available on the Windsor EV, although that may be something future models will offer.

Battery and Charging Specs

MG Windsor Battery

The Windsor EV's battery pack today is 38 kWh prismatic LFP cells, and they are super safe and efficient. The upcoming 50 kWh battery pack would most likely be based on similar chemistry with greater energy density and efficiency.

There are no announcements regarding the charging times yet, although because MG's 50 kWh ZS EV battery is capable of rapid charging, its new Windsor EV model is going to presumably support similar features. These include:

  • DC fast charging (0-80%) in approximately 50-60 minutes

  • AC home charging (0-100%) in about 8-9 hours

These charging speeds will allow owners to charge quickly and reduce downtime, making the car even more convenient for highway driving.

Market Positioning and Pricing

MG Windsor EV has managed to find a niche in the Indian EV market with a feature-rich package at an aggressive price of Rs. 13.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The price will increase with the addition of a larger battery pack, but the actual prices are yet to be released. Considering MG's aggressive pricing strategy, the long-range variant may cost anything between Rs. 16-17 lakh (ex-showroom).

Even with the expected increase in price, the wider range will make the Windsor EV a desirable choice for buyers who intend to use it for city-to-city travel. The BaaS strategy adopted by MG, where customers can lease the battery pack separately and pay a subscription charge on a monthly basis, will also reduce initial costs.

Competitive Landscape

Tata Nexon & Mahindra XUV 400

The MG Windsor EV competes with vehicles such as the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV400 EV, and Hyundai Kona Electric in India. While the Nexon EV Max is currently available with a 40.5 kWh battery that has a range of 453 km, the new 50 kWh pack Windsor EV model might even outdo this, making it an even bigger threat.

Additionally, the voluminous interior of the Windsor EV, high-end amenities, and new ownership model make it stand out from other vehicles. With the Indian government continuously encouraging EV uptake through subsidies and charging station development, vehicles such as the Windsor EV will become increasingly popular.

Final Verdict

The moment is not too opportune to introduce a larger battery pack in the MG Windsor EV. The growing needs for long-range EVs position MG in a good position to capture a larger market base. The current model in itself is well-accepted in the market because of its space, comfort, and features, and an extended range version will even grow its demand more.

But the pricing strategy will be the most important thing to keep an eye on. As well as a larger battery means a larger bill, MG's BaaS model can help reduce some of the cost pressure on consumers. If executed smartly, the Windsor EV with a longer range can help reinforce MG's position as a leading EV player in India.

With an official launch expected by April 2025, all eyes are now on MG to see how it packages and prices this much-anticipated upgrade. If you’re in the market for an EV with a balance of affordability, range, and features, the Windsor EV long-range variant might just be the perfect choice for you.
