Mini Innova? Toyota Rumion Hits the Market at Just ₹9 Lakh

February 3rd, 2025

A significant step forward towards consolidation of its leadership in the compact MPV space, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has finally launched the long-awaited Mini Inova, now to be retailed as Toyota Rumion. The new product is likely to lock horns directly with Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Kia Carens, with a starting price of ₹9 lakh, ex-showroom.

This new launch, Rumion, by Toyota is part of the company's strategic bid to tap the increasing demand for spacious, family-oriented vehicles in the Indian market.

A New Player in the Compact MPV Category

The Toyota Rumion, often called the "Mini Inova," is the rebadged Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. Both have been on the winning end since this gives them the latitude to expand product offerings with almost zero additional investments.

The Toyota Rumion is essentially a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga in design and functionality but carries subtle styling cues that are unmistakably Toyota, making it an entity on its own.

Demand in the compact MPV segment has been growing steadily in India, and it correlates with the requirement for a perfect blend of space, comfort, and affordability. The Rumion is poised to tap into that demand by providing customers with a reliable, feature-packed vehicle for families and fleet operators.

Design and Styling

The Toyota Rumion sports a sleek and modern design, aligning with Toyota's global design language. It may share the same platform as the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, but it comes with a restyled front grille, alloy wheels with Toyota branding, and minor changes to the bumper and headlamps. All these updates make the Rumion appear more premium and classy than its sibling.

The inside of the Rumion is spacious, with seven passengers accommodated conveniently. It has optimized cabin space to make travel comfortable, with enough leg and head space for passengers inside the cabin. The interior design uses quality materials and a well-designed layout, which makes the interior space comfortable for lengthy travel.

Features and Technology

Toyota has added many features to the Rumion to provide a smooth and convenient ride. The top variants of the Rumion offer a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is paired with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity to seamlessly integrate a smartphone. Features also include auto climate control, keyless entry, push-button start, and rear AC vents.

Safety is in the blood of Toyota, and so with the Rumion. The airbags are present on the front sides dual, with ABS and EBD as standard fitments for all the variants.

Rear parking sensors and rearview camera as standard fitment irrespective of the variants chosen. Side and curtain airbags come with higher trims to ensure maximum protection for all passengers.

Performance and Engine Options

Under the bonnet, the Toyota Rumion boasts a 1.5 liter K15B petrol engine delivering a power output of 103 bhp and a torque of 138 Nm. The engine is quite reliable and frugal in fuel consumption, which gives the best usage whether one is to plod through urban activities or take long highway drives. The automotive giants also extend their variants with both manual and automatic transmissions depending on diverse customer choices.

What makes the Rumion stand out is its fuel efficiency. The manual variant delivers an impressive mileage of 20.51 km/l, whereas the automatic variant is able to achieve a mileage of 18.69 km/l. That makes the Rumion one of the most fuel-efficient in its segment and ensures a lower running cost to the owner.

Pricing and Variants

The four variants of Toyota Rumion are S, G, V, and V AT. Starting from ₹9 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base S variant is affordable considering it offers ample space to shelter a family.

The top-end V AT model with all the large features and trappings goes up to ₹11.73 lakh (ex-showroom) - hence, a competitive price that would make this Toyota Rumion somewhat strong contender to the compact MPV lots in the market.

Target Market/Audience

Young families, small business owners, and fleet operators who have emphasized space, comfort, and reliability form the target market for the Toyota Rumion.

A competitive price and feature-rich offering in the Toyota Rumion will attract a large number of customers, particularly those trading up from hatchbacks or sedans.

Through this collaboration with Maruti Suzuki, Toyota has decided to launch Rumion. This is a strategic move because Toyota would be following the compact car's know-how of Suzuki while maintaining its brand reputation in terms of quality and durability.

Through this collaboration, Toyota is able to offer a product that is not only affordable but also reliable without pulling down its brand values.
