Tata Harrier, Safari Petrol Launch soon - Price, Features, Launch date

April 5th, 2025

It all began in 2019 when Tata launched the Harrier, followed by the Safari in 2021. Both SUVs came in strong with their Land Rover-derived OmegaArc platform, which was heavily advertised by the brand, as it had bold styling and a solid road presence that instantly caught attention. But ever since their debut, there’s been one common request from Indian buyers— Where's the petrol engine? While rivals offered multiple powertrains, Tata stuck with its dependable 2.0L diesel mill, which was sourced from Fiat, and is also used in a number of Harrier/Safari rivals— Jeep Compass, Jeep Meridian, MG Hector, and MG Hector Plus. And now, after years of demand and several Auto Expo teases, Tata is finally bringing a petrol-powered version of the Harrier and Safari to life.

Tata Harrier/Safari Safety Ratings

Safari's Crash Test

Before we dive into the new engine, here’s something even more exciting— both the Harrier and Safari recently scored a full 5-star safety rating under the newly introduced Bharat NCAP crash test protocol. This makes them not only among the safest in Tata’s lineup but also one of the safest SUVs in their respective segments. The SUVs performed exceptionally well in both adult and child occupant protection, further strengthening Tata's image as a safety-first brand.

Tata Harrier/Safari Exterior Design

Harrier Front & Side Profile

The Harrier and Safari are both based on a very similar design structure. In fact, the pre-facelift models had the same design, but since the facelift models came in, they have brought in some distinction. Upfront, the Harrier gets a split Headlamp design treatment with LED headlamps offered from the base variants. The Grille has been given a glossy treatment with chrome bar inserts. Lower down, it gets a silver colored skid plate with Front Parking sensors. On the nose, it hosts a connected LED DRL with indicators included.

Safari Front & Side Profile

The Side profile gets the same stylish body structure with an option of three Alloy wheel sizes— 17’, 18’, and 19’ (only in Dark editions). The wheel claddings are minimal with muscular arches. The Harrier gets conventional door handles with request sensors on front doors. Tata Motors has been using the same design for the ORVMs on most of its SUVs— Nexon, Curvy, Harrier, and Safari. These ORVMs come with 360-degree Camera units underneath.

Safari Rear Profile

The Rear profile is where the distinction is visible, as the LED bar connected to the tail lamps has slightly different designs for both SUVs. Other than that, Harrier is a bit curvy from the back, and the Safari, being a 7-seater, has a straight standing rear profile.

Tata Harrier/Safari Interiors

Harrier Interiors

Now step inside, and the interiors feel exactly how you’d want a premium SUV to be— modern, plush, and tech-loaded. You get a 12.3' floating touchscreen Infotainment screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a fully digital 10.25' Instrument cluster with Map display feature, a Voice-assisted Panoramic sunroof, and a 360-degree camera with blind spot monitoring.

Safari Interiors

The dashboard design feels clean and premium with soft-touch materials, and there's ambient lighting with multiple color choices. Ventilated front seats, Dual-zone Climate control, JBL-tuned 9-speaker audio system, and Tata Motors’ iRA Connected car tech with Voice commands. It also gets a haptic-touch feedback panel for Climate controls, boot opening, Hazard light, and a few more controls.

Overall, the Harrier’s interiors try to provide a young, funky experience with its vibrant and youthful design and choice of colors. On the other hand, the Safari’s interiors are designed to look more mature and for an older audience.

Tata Harrier/ Safari Powertrain

Coming to the heart of the matter, the powertrains. Until now, Tata has only offered the Harrier and Safari with the tried-and-tested 2.0L Kryotec diesel engine that makes 170 hp and 350 Nm of torque, mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

But now, things are about to get spicy. Tata is finally introducing its much-awaited 1.5L Turbo GDi turbo-petrol engine. This motor is set to produce 170 hp and 280 Nm of torque, and it will be paired with a 6-speed manual as well as a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCA)— offering both enthusiast engagement and smooth city cruising.

The engine has been showcased multiple times since Auto Expo 2020, and Tata’s been working hard to fine-tune it for Indian conditions and BS6 Phase 2 norms. Soon, Tata Motors will roll out this engine with the upcoming Sierra, and after that, it will be fitted into the Harrier and Safari.

Tata Harrier/Safari Price & Launch

As for the expected pricing and launch, we’re hearing whispers that the petrol variants of the Harrier and Safari could launch by mid to late 2025. Being a 1.5L unit, it will save itself from heavy taxes, thus, it will give birth to much more affordable variants of both SUVs. Expected prices— Harrier: ₹14 lakh to ₹25.50 lakh and Safari: ₹14 lakh to ₹26 lakh.
