The entire world is rushing towards the electric transition except the Japanese giant, Toyota. Toyota officials have also mentioned in an interview that they are less confident for the EV market to even cross 30% Market Share worldwide. This directed them to focus more on the practical solution for the pollution exerted by ICE vehicles, which is Plug-in Hybrids and Hybrids. But, in a recent interview with a Toyota official, it was confirmed that Toyota is ready to convert one of its most popular Pickup trucks into an EV, and it is none other than the Toyota Hilux.
The Hilux Revo BEV was announced in late 2022, and at the time of its announcement, it was also confirmed that this Hilux EV would go into production in 2023. Recently, a statement made by a Toyota Official confirmed that the brand is soon going to kick-start an All-electric Manufacturing Facility in Thailand. Moreover, it is almost certain that the Hilux EV will be the first Electric Pickup Truck to be manufactured in that facility.
Secondly, Thailand, which accounts for more than 50% of sales of such pickup trucks was Toyota’s first preference to build this factory. An official also stated that the upcoming Pickup truck will be primarily made for Thailand and other ASEAN markets but, will also consider the rest of the export fields, once established over here.
The Hilux EV will go head-on against the Electric Isuzu D-max VCross. The Isuzu VCross Pickup Truck has already been displayed by the brand, unlike Toyota’s Hilux EV.
Secondly, the platform on which the Hilux will be made would least likely be the current one, as it is a ladder frame chassis. Toyota would most probably go for a new platform for the Hilux BEV. Now, it depends on Toyota which platforms it chooses to go with, as the brand has already unveiled two Electric Pickup Truck platforms -
The 2023 Toyota EPU Concept
The Toyota Tacoma Electric Pickup Truck
However, using the Tacoma Electric Pickup Truck Platform would not be feasible for the brand, as Tacoma stands on a premium end to the Hilux, comparatively. So, the EPU Concept could be the one sitting underneath the upcoming Toyota Hilux EV.
Lastly, it is expected that the Hilux EV would come across with a subsequent update both design and technology-wide. The current ICE Hilux is already a decade old and has not been updated with any sort of major upgrades. So, the new Hilux EV could bring some advanced technology to the table, which will ultimately be forwarded in the ICE Hilux and Fortuner, too.
Toyota has not yet unveiled any sort of detail regarding the hardware of its upcoming Hilux EV. But, it also is not rocket science to predict what the first Electric Pickup Truck in India from Toyota would get.
According to our presumptions, we believe the Hilux EV would come holding a 70 kWh battery pack, which will produce a strong output of power to compensate for all the purposes the Electric Hilux will have. This Battery pack will most probably have Two motors, which ultimately will make it a 4WD Electric Pickup.
The 2025 Toyota Hilux EV’s India launch will happen in 2026, as Toyota will first establish a market for the Electric Hilux in the ASEAN nations. Thereafter, it will start exporting the Hilux EV to other potential markets, from which the Indian Automotive Market has a greater chance of being one.
The price of the upcoming Hilux EV will be kept a bit higher than the ICE Hilux, according to us, it could start from ₹50 lacs.
