Volkswagen Group in India has been quiet in terms of new launches in the market. Their last “new vehicle” launch took place in June 2022, when the brand launched the Volkswagen Virtus, which is a sedan based on the MQBA India platform used in their Midsize SUV - Taigun. Since then, Volkswagen has been launching new editions occasionally of both vehicles. But, the real question is when will Volkswagen Taigun and Volkswagen Virtus Facelifts will launch? And what to expect from them?
When Volkswagen launched its Taigun and Virtus, it launched both vehicles in India first and then exported them to other 20+ markets. The Taigun and Virtus are sold under different names in different markets, like Taigun is sold as T-Cross in Indonesia and Virtus is sold as Lavida in China.
But, these two products are quite popular in almost every market where they are being served, and based on a few speculations, we have come to know that Taigun and Virtus will receive their major facelift updates by 2026.
These updates will be made in India, like the current models but, could be first launched in other international markets, like Brazil, etc. These updates are also expected to have a few design changes, which would bring freshness to both the vehicles’ design language. However, not many exceptional or generational design changes are expected, as they are just facelifts. It will also add a few more technological features that would cater for the modern market needs, as the current models somewhat lack a few modern features.
The Taigun and Virtus facelifts will see similar design changes and feature updates. The Design changes would consist of a few tweaks in the grille design, which could make it more compact and minimal, as they have to also consider their upcoming possible EV iterations. The Headlamp housing would also suffer a design change though the beams would be kept the same. The Alloys will get a new design, which could be more sharper and might be up-sized as well.
We could also see a few design changes for the dashboard, which could also fit a new bigger screen for both Infotainment purposes and Instrument Cluster. New software is less likely expected but, new features, like ADAS Level 2, Electronic Tailgate, Panoramic sunroof, Voice Assisted Features, Remotely operated features, etc are highly expected.
Mechanically, both vehicles would see no change, as the engines they use are compliant with the current and upcoming emission norms. So, new engine options will not arrive with the facelift. But, currently, both vehicles use two engines, which we mentioned earlier. Both the engines are turbocharged Petrol-powered units, no Diesel will be offered with Taigun and Virtus facelifts, as Volkswagen decided to stop Diesel-offering 5 years ago.
The 1.0 L TSI Petrol engine, which produces 114 hp and 178 Nm torque. This engine is locally produced in India, which is why, it is offered in the lower and mid variants of both vehicles. This engine is mated to a 5-speed Manual Gearbox and a 6-speed Automatic Torque Converter Gearbox.
The 1.5 L TSI EVO Petrol engine, which produces 150 hp and 250 Nm torque. This engine is imported in India, which is why, it is used in upper variants of the Taigun. It is mated to a 6-speed Manual and a 7-speed DCT Gearbox. This engine is also said to be a bit more fuel efficient than the 1.0 L TSI engine because of its Active Cylinder Technology.
